UBC Manufacturing Engineering Welcomes the Class of 2026 on Imagine Day

On Imagine Day, UBC Manufacturing Engineering warmly welcomed the incoming MANU cohort, ushering them into a new academic journey. This special day, a UBC tradition, offered  MANU students a unique introduction to their university life and a chance to connect with their future mentors and peers.

The Imagine Day event commenced with an inspiring presentation highlighting the significance of the manufacturing engineering industry, setting the stage for what lies ahead. As students settled into their new academic environment, they were introduced to the different aspects of the program at UBC, including the exciting opportunity to participate in the engineering co-op program, providing them with valuable real-world engineering experience alongside their studies Members of the Manufacturing Engineering Undergraduate Club also welcomed the newcomers by shedding light on the vibrant student life within the program and emphasizing the invaluable peer support available.

In addition to these informative sessions, students had the chance to explore the Manufacturing Engineering Maker’s Space, engaging in a collaborative team-building activity that fostered a sense of camaraderie right from the start. Apart from these activities and as part of the onboarding process, an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) workshop was conducted by Dr. Ben Britton, the Chair of the MANU EDI Committee. This workshop addressed pressing EDI topics, ensuring that all students gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

To the Class of 2026, welcome to an exciting journey that holds the promise of engineering marvels and lasting impacts on the world. Together, let’s build a brighter future!

First Graduating Class of the Manufacturing Engineering Program

On June 1st, 2022, the class of 2022 became the first to graduate from the manufacturing engineering program. This is an incredible accomplishment for the students and a milestone for the program.

The Manufacturing Engineering program is the first program co-developed and co-launched across both campuses and began accepting students into the 2nd year in September 2019. Since its inception, the program has been working with a vision to develop next-generation engineers who can actively contribute and innovate in the ever-evolving manufacturing space. The graduates are now to translate the learning from the program into the real world and build on this promise. As the first graduating class, they will most definitely be the bar-setter for the future graduates and the pioneers to uphold best practices and UBC engineering values.

Congratulations to the class of 2022! We wish the graduates great success in the next phase of their life.

Dr. Adam Clare Joins the Manufacturing Engineering Program

Potrait of Dr. Adam ClareThe Manufacturing Engineering program is pleased to welcome Professor Adam Clare to UBC as a faculty member. Dr. Clare joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering UBC Vancouver to teach in the Manufacturing Engineering program. Dr. Clare joins UBC from the University of Nottingham in the UK, where he was a Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Manufacturing Engineering (M3), and the Rolls-Royce/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair.

In his research, Professor Clare investigates how non-traditional manufacturing methods can be used to create a desired shape while enhancing material properties and creating new surfaces. This research is aimed at creating new methods and materials for use in fields like aerospace and biomedical engineering, which are continuously developing and often require parts and materials with additional functionality or performance. His work involves electrical discharge machining, electron beam melting, laser processing of materials, process monitoring and control, joining technologies, electrolyte jet machining, and additive manufacturing techniques.

Bridging research and application, Dr. Clare serves as Director and Scientific Advisor to Texture Jet Ltd. and Scintam Engineering Ltd., which uses the findings of his research to develop new technologies for industry. He also contributes as an editor to several publications: the Journal of Materials Processing Technology, Precision Engineering, Manufacturing Letters, as well as the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture. Dr. Clare is currently President of the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU).

We are excited for Dr. Clare to join UBC as a faculty member in the summer of 2022, and our research and teaching community!

Upcoming Seminar: Breaking Stereotypes

Speaker: Courtney Mandock, Boeing Winnipeg

Time and date: 9:00 – 10:00 am, March 8, 2022

Location: Hosted on Zoom: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/68604607211

Courtney is passionate about breaking stereotypes in all areas of her life. As a former Canadian title holder, a female engineer in training, and a mental health advocate, she knows stereotypes intimately and is breaking them daily.

In 2019, Courtney won the national title of Miss Intercontinental Canada and represented Canada at the Miss Intercontinental Pageant in Egypt later that year. She is a manufacturing EIT at Boeing Winnipeg Canada, having graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor in Applied Sciences, Mechanical Engineering. She is also a mental health advocate, having experienced depression and anxiety while she was working towards her degree.

Courtney doesn’t let stereotypes define her. Her career, her personal life, and her passions would be severely limited if she let society’s labels dictate who she is or what she could do.

DR. ALTINTAS ELECTED MEMBER OF NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING AND ACATECH

Mechanical Engineering Professor Yusuf Altintas has recently been elected a Member of two prestigious engineering organizations, the US’ National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and German National Academy of Science and Engineering, ACATECH.

Dr. Altintas’ membership in the NAE recognizes his leadership in the field of “metal-cutting mechanics and machine tool systems research and industry applications.” The NAE is part of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. It has 2698 members of which Dr. Altintas joins as one of the 22 international member elected this year. NAE has a total of 310 international members to be recognized with this prestigious honor.

Membership in the NAE recognizes the contributions of outstanding engineers who have impacted their field through:

…engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature,…the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.

The German academy, ACATECH brings together expertise from various science and engineering fields. With about 600 members, Dr. Altintas appears to be the first member of ACATECH from Canada.

At UBC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Altintas is the NSERC–P&WC-Sandvik Coromant Industrial Research Chair, where he conducts research on the development of digital model of machining physics integrated with the machine tool’s structural dynamics and computer controller. His publications received about 34,500 citations with an h index (a rating of a scholar’s impact) of 96 on Google Scholar, and his digital manufacturing technology is used by more than 300 companies in aerospace, machine tool, and machining industry globally. He is also the founding coordinator of the Department’s highly-sought after undergraduate Mechatronics Option and is one of the founders of UBC’s new Manufacturing Engineering program in 2019.
